Privacy Policy

This is an English translation of the Japanese Privacy Policy. If there is any discrepancy between the two, the Japanese version prevails.

Tactical Optimist Labs (“we”, “us”) sets out below how we handle user information in STRIDE_X (“the App”), an iOS application we provide.

1. Introduction — your walks never leave your device

The App has no accounts and no servers. Your walking records (your location track, the times you passed waypoints, your courses and so on) are stored only in a database on your device, and are never sent anywhere, including to us.

We do not collect personal information about users of the App, such as names, email addresses, dates of birth or phone numbers. There is no sign-up system at all.

That said, the App is not entirely offline. Its network connections are described in the next section.

2. Network connections made by the App

The App makes the five kinds of connections listed below (in-app purchases are described in Section 8). None of them sends your walking records.

ConnectionMap display
Connects toGeospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) map tiles (cyberjapandata.gsi.go.jp)
WhenWhen a map is shown and that area is not yet stored on your device. This also happens during tracking
What the provider receivesThe tile numbers of the map area being shown, and your IP address. These are not coordinates, but they do reveal roughly which area you are looking at
ConnectionMaps outside Japan
Connects toApple Inc. (MapKit maps)
WhenWhen the center of the map is outside Japan. This also happens during tracking
What the provider receivesThe map area being shown, and your IP address
ConnectionPlace name suggestions
Connects toApple Inc. (MapKit reverse geocoding)
WhenWhen you place or select a point while building a course, and when you choose a location to mark during tracking (if the App's built-in place data has a place at that spot, its name is used and no connection is made)
What the provider receivesThe coordinates of that one point
Connection"Follow roads"
Connects toApple Inc. (MapKit directions)
WhenOnly when you explicitly choose this way of connecting points while building a course
What the provider receivesThe coordinates of the two points being connected
ConnectionSearching for places, addresses and shops
Connects toApple Inc. (MapKit search)
WhenWhen you search while building a course, and when you search from the screen for choosing a location to mark during tracking
What the provider receivesThe words you typed, and the map area shown at the time

“Follow roads” happens only while you are building a course.

Place name suggestions and search can also happen during tracking, when you choose a location to mark. What the provider receives then is the coordinates of the point you chose or the map area being shown; your track is never sent. When you are offline, the App looks things up in its built-in place-name and place data, and makes no connection.

How these providers handle information is governed by their own policies. The App uses Apple’s MapKit to display maps, and any communication MapKit makes with Apple to run the map is likewise governed by Apple’s policies.

3. Use of location information

PurposeRecording the route you walk, showing your current location on the map, detecting arrival at and departure from waypoints, and calculating remaining distance, pace and estimated arrival times
FrequencyReceived roughly once per second. Only points recorded after you have moved a certain distance are stored
SendingNone. There is nowhere to send it
RetentionNo fixed period. Nothing is deleted automatically; the data stays on your device until you delete it

The App continues to receive your location while the screen is off. It is a tracking app designed for single sessions that can run past 20 hours, and recording needs to continue with the screen off while you walk.

The App works with location permission set to “While Using the App”. It never asks for “Always”.

The App asks for permission to send notifications, so that it can alert you when you go off course or reach a waypoint. Notifications are created on your device; they are not sent from an external server.

4. Information stored on your device

The following information is stored only on your device. None of it is sent anywhere.

The display name is optional; you can use every feature of the App with it left blank. The profile picture and header image are copies of the single photo you choose through the iOS photo picker. The App never accesses your entire photo library.

5. Backups

The database that holds your walking records may be included in iCloud or other backups, depending on your device’s backup settings.

This is standard iOS behavior, not something the App sends. Please check your own device’s settings for how backups are handled.

Cached maps can be downloaded again and take up a lot of space, so they are excluded from backups.

6. Exporting and deleting records

From the Activity details screen, you can export a GPX file or the database itself, and pass it to other apps through the share sheet. Courses you have created can also be exported as GPX files from the course list. These files include the course line and the names and notes of waypoints. Once you pass a file to another app, how it is handled is outside the App’s control, so please be careful about where you share it.

Stored information can be deleted item by item, as follows.

Deleting an activity does not delete the marks made during it. If needed, delete them from the list of marks. Titles and stats are recalculated from the remaining activities, so they may change when you delete an activity.

To erase everything at once, delete the App from your device. Deleting the App deletes all information stored on your device at the same time.

7. Analytics, advertising and tracking

The App uses none of the following.

The App therefore does not track your behavior, and information about how you use the App is not provided to third parties. You will never see a prompt asking for permission to track.

The only external library the App uses reads and writes the database on your device, and this library makes no network connections.

If you have turned on sharing of crash data in the iOS “Analytics & Improvements” settings, anonymized crash information may be provided to us through Apple. This is a standard iOS mechanism, not something the App collects on its own.

8. In-app purchases

All in-app purchases in the App are processed through Apple’s App Store.

Payment information, such as credit card numbers, is handled by Apple and is never provided to us.

Purchase status is checked on your device. Your purchase history is not sent to any server of ours, and the App does not keep its own copy of it (purchase status is managed with Apple’s mechanisms).

9. Contact

When you contact us from the App, our contact page opens in your browser. The App never automatically sends the content of your inquiry or information about your device. “Write a review on the App Store” in the App also simply opens the App Store.

The email address, name and message you send through the form on the contact page are used only to reply to your inquiry, and for no other purpose.

Form submissions reach us via Netlify (Netlify, Inc.), which hosts this website. Submissions are screened automatically to prevent spam. We do not know your contact details unless you contact us.

10. Provision to third parties

We do not provide user information to third parties. In the first place, there is no route by which your walking records leave your device.

This does not apply, however, when we receive a request for disclosure based on laws and regulations.

11. Children

The App is intended for adults taking part in long-distance walking events of around 100 km, and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not verify age or collect dates of birth.

12. Changes to this policy

We may revise this policy as features of the App are added or changed. We will announce any significant changes on this page.
